I ordered 2 of these because I felt they would be beneficial for another friend. I haven't given it to her yet because I am still not sure if this is what I consider "safe" enough for me to pass on. Reason being, when I tested the item, the counter where I had the mat was very hot after sitting my curling irons on the mat for about 5 minutes. I love the fact that it turns white when the heat hits it but still have some uncertainties if my counter will not overheat. Otherwise, you will have to test for yourself.

I wanted something like this to prevent my counter from burning if I accidentally left my flat iron on for a bit. I was very disappointed when the product arrived because it is so thin. It lets the counter get very hot underneath it. I can't attest to whether or not it prevents the burn marks because I haven't had my flat iron on long enough to let it do so. I wouldn't recommend this product if you're looking for something to prevent counter burns. As other reviewers have said, it is a pretty mat and it is kind of cool that it turns white when it's hot, but as far as functionality goes, I would pass on this one.

Update: 2/2/13

I still use my mat (although I don't think it does much good for my counter) and the middle has turned permanently white, even when it's completely cool. So, not only does it not provide the counter protection that I want, it doesn't look good anymore either.

I love this mat. I bought it over a year ago and it is still holding up. I am in college and do people's hair as a part-time hustle, so I use my (insert name of any heated styling tool) a LOT. The surface beneath the mat still gets warm...but if you're looking to protect it from burns...this is the mat to do it.
