Hot Tools 1168 Ceramic Tourmaline Flat Iron 1-1/2 Inch

Hot Tools 1168 Ceramic Tourmaline Flat Iron 1-1/2 InchUsed this 3 times and it is completely broke at the hinge! I called the company and i got the run around on replacing it! I will never buy another product from HotTools!

My iron is still working but almost inusable because both of the rubber pieces on the side of the iron are falling off. I am going to buy a new one, but not hot tools.

Hot Tools is usually a very good brand. I have friends who swear by them. So when I purchased this flat iron I figured I would be getting a great product that would last a long time. I purchased the flat iron on 7/22/12 and it worked really well while it lasted. I really liked the 1 ½" size of the iron. But on 9/8/12 it completely stopped working. It would not heat up. I even had it plugged in and on for over 30 minutes and it was ice cold. Amazon doesn't do exchanges and required that I pay to send it in and would only give me a partial credit since it was after the return period (I think the return period is only 30 days). I am following up with the manufacturer because this is not the first item I have bought from Hot Tools that stopped working within 3 months. The other item I had purchased started sparking and was easily returned to the store I purchased it at. This flat iron has been discontinued by other stores (I.E Ulta) which was why I purchased it at Amazon. Maybe this malfunction is why the brick and mortar stores stopped carrying it. I will probably never buy another Hot Tools item again since the last two items I purchased had defects.

Before getting this straightener, I had been using a Remington for years, and was very happy with it. I was looking for something in the 1 1/2" category, and thought this would work well, while still being in my price range.

My last straightener got to 430 degrees, and this one claims the same, but I very highly doubt it. The outside of it feels closer to that temperature than the actual plates do.

Also, and I wish I had noticed this before buying it, the plates don't float. It sounds like a small thing, but when you're trying to get up to the roots, it makes a huge difference.

It glides smoothly over larger sections of hair, but if you try a smaller section, it snags my hair easily. I can typically go to bed on wet hair, wake up, and have it straight in 15 minutes, which is very fast considering how thick and wavy my hair is. But with this, it's at least 30 minutes.

There's no indication for when it actually gets to your desired temperature, and it doesn't auto-shutoff, which kind of sucks, seeing as how I forget to turn my straightener off all the time.

UPDATE:

I've had this straightener for about 3 months, and it's already broken. I dropped it, and the pivoting arm broke. It's still useable, but requires holding the broken arm at a certain angle. Definitely buying another Remington.

So, in all, there's not too many positives about this flat iron.
