I have very thick hair that has a bit of natural curl to it. This flat iron has been a perfect find for me. I use it on the highest setting and dry my hair about 90% before using. I tried it on wet out of the shower hair and it worked but it took forever and was a little damaging. Drying my hair most of the way first and then using the iron makes it nice and sleek and adds great shine. My only caution is using the high setting causes a lot of steam and the hair to get very hot so becareful with touching hair right after releasing as well as which way you angle the iron when using or your fingers will get steamed. Over all it is an A+ for me!

I really like this flat iron! I've been using a titanium instruments 1" iron for the past 3 years. It finally went out on me last week and after looking through reviews, I decided to try this one. I'm so glad that I did. I have long, thick, somewhat course natural (not chemically processed) African American hair (type 3c/4a) and I was able to straighten my whole head in about 20 minutes (as compared to about an hour in the past).

Pros:

-Gets very hot very quickly

-Only had to go over the hair once to get most pieces straight (twice at most)

-Able to straighten large sections effectively

-Inexpensive

-Heat setting is easy to read and control

Cons:

-Size prevents the iron from getting close to the root, so if you need to get really close, it may be worth getting a small flat iron as well (5/8" or so)

-Doesn't have floating plates, so small sections may not get as straight

-Some pulling at my hair, but only when I tried to do smaller sections

I loved this straightener until it suddenly and completely died on me only a few weeks after purchase. I have no idea if this is normal or if I had a fluke one, but a product that dies quickly on you is never good!
