Remington S7210 Wet 2 Straight Flat Iron with Soy Hydra Complex, 1 Inch

Remington S7210 Wet 2 Straight Flat Iron with Soy Hydra Complex, 1 InchI own or have owned numerous high-end flatirons: FHI, Chi, GHD, Sedu, etc.. I have also used many other irons belonging to friends/relatives, both high-end and budget models, including the older version of this iron which I was not at all impressed with.

The older navy/purple version looked tacky and had a cheap feel/build quality, and its control layout with buttons for changing the heat settings was poor. I received a sample of this new model to review as part of the Amazon Vine program, and I was quite surprised at what a major improvement they have made. This version both looks and feels like a high-end iron in all respects, very impressive considering the price!

Performance wise, I found this iron to work well on dry or damp/towel dried hair. I would not recommend using this or any other flat iron on soaking wet hair, it is too difficult to get the roots sufficiently dry without burning your scalp, and if you don't get the root area properly the whole thing will look bad. So if you plan to use it wet I recommend to gently towel dry or blow dry until the hair is damp and the roots are mostly dry.

Note that using a flatiron on wet/damp hair makes a sizzling sound as a result of the water being vaporized into steam; it sounds kind of scary, but flatironing wet hair in and of itself will not damage your hair any more than normal flatironing. The trick to flatironing wet hair is that you must section hair into very small pieces such that all the water can be removed in two or three passes.. if you do thicker sections then you will have to go over the same section many more times to get it completely dry and this will result in damage to your hair.

Pros:

+ Thick ceramic plate, unlike some budget flatirons which have only thin ceramic coating over the metal baseplate (You can see the thickness through the steam vents). A thin ceramic layer will result in poor heating and uneven heat distribution. This iron maintains heat well and seems to have good even heat distribution.

+ Dial to control heat settings, much easier to use than +/buttons

+ Auto shutoff

+ Nice aesthetics and build quality

+ No problems with hair getting snagged in the plates

Cons:

Cord is a few feet shorter than my other irons, not really a problem for me but it might be for some

Initial heat-up is somewhat slow at around 30 seconds, compared to my FHI which heats up in around 10 seconds

Grip area gets a little bit hot.. not hot enough to burn my hand, but enough to be kind of annoying especially at the higher heat settings

This one is mostly a matter of personal preference but I like floating plates more than fixed plates like this iron has. That said, I have never seen any budget flatiron with good floating plates, so better to have fixed plates than poorly implemented floating plates. Many high-end irons use fixed plates also, so again its mostly a matter of personal preference.

All in all, the cons are only minor issues and I highly recommend this if you are looking for a budget-friendly flatiron.

I first want to tell you a little about my hair type so that you may better understand my review. I'm mixed race (Black and Irish)My hair is thick, wavy, dry, coarse and F R I Z Z Y .Length wise it's to my mid back. I generally just wash and go because it's just too much work to blow dry then flat iron.I was very interested in this flat iron because it promised that I could forgo the blow drying and just flat iron my wet hair to dry and straight!

I got great results with this iron! My hair turned out soft, silky and straight. I experienced none of the crispy "fried" results I have gotten with other irons.Perhaps that's the Soy Hydra complex that the plates are coated with.

I used this on freshly washed and conditioned hair.My hair was slightly more than damp and I applied a heat protection creme prior to straightening. Yes, there is steaming and hissing while this drying and straightening your hair but it does not seem to be as drying as blow drying and flat ironing.

I found using slightly smaller sections of hair works better than large sections. Too large of sections failed to dry quickly. Also I got better results after using it a few times...So I recommended that you practice with this iron a bit to great results. I selected the 1 inch slim size of the iron (They also sell a 2 inch wide model) The slim one is so light and easy to handle.

Now for build quality! The iron is light weight but does not look or feel cheap. I did not pay for mine so I was shocked when I found out the low selling price. What I really loved was that the plates pinch completely together! On some other irons I have used there is a slight gap (and I hate that gap)The cord is nice and long and it swivels. It heats quickly and has auto shut off if you forget to unplug it.

Now for the temperature settings... Well it's a dial and not a digital display but that's not a big deal. What I did not like is that rather than displaying actual temperatures the dial has numbers and lights that correspond to the heat settings.Numbers 20-30 accompanied by a green light for wet hair.Numbers 1-19 accompanied by an amber light for dry hair.

Bottom line :

I love the iron !My results were fantastic and I loved not having to blow dry my hair ,

I have color-treated and very thick mid length hair. I've had another straightening iron in the past, but rarely used it as my hair takes so long to dry that I'd run out of time before getting to it. With this Remington flat iron, I can get my hair mostly dry, style it immediately and achieve great results in a much shorter time. I love the large green indicator light that tells me the iron is on and ready, and the wide range of heat settings. I would love it to have a closing feature like the other iron I owned, but that's a small price to pay for the great results this one yields. Would strongly recommend, especially for those with thick hair which takes longer to dry.

First of all let me just say that this is my first straight iron. But it was recommended to me by an expensive stylist and I very happy with the product. My hair goes from towel dry (not dripping) to dry and straight in about 15-20 minutes. I have very long thick hair so this is really nice, and I would compare it (as the stylist did) to a higher priced unit. You won't regret the results from this one. The price for what you get is unbelievable (don't forget to use heat protectant spray with any flat iron though :). Happy styling!

My two teenaged daughters really love this product. One blow dries and straightens and one just lets her hair air dry and then straightens. They both love this iron. One has really super thick hair though she never blow dries she loves to use this on her wet hair. She doesn't notice it conditioning with the soy hydra but she uses a good heat protectant as well. My other daughter loves to style and crimp her hair as well as dry it and she really has fun with this iron.

My experience of being older than they are with much finer, thinner hair is that when I use this, I don't get the volume that the blow dryer gives me so my hair turns out kind of flat. I need that extra volume! I also find that the iron is rather hot to hold and the steam is really super hot if you get too close with your hand. My kids do not have that complaint but I find that the iron is really hot when you dry hair with it.

I think if you have nice thick hair or thick wavy hair, this iron works great. For thinning or fine hair, you can use this like a normal hot iron and style or straighten but if you get a boost from a blow dryer when drying and styling, this product doesn't add that extra volume like a blow dryer does.
