The plates are smooth but the heat is lacking. No protection from humidity, moisture is stilling the hair which is a good thing yet the hair is not completely smooth and lacking shine. I'm not satisfied with the "new" technology. If something ain't brokedon't fix it, the first generation was far better. I'm disappointed.
I have very thick and curly hair. I swear by GHD. It's an excellent product. I would definitely say it's worth the investment.

I have used the 1" GHD for years and LOVE it. Just recently cut off 16" of my hair! This 1/2" styler is perfect for my short layers!!! GHD has an excellent 2 year warranty. When my 1" Styler wasn't getting as hot as it did when I first bought it, I called them and they sent me a brand new one! LOVE GHD!!!

I own CHI and FHI irons, I prefer the GHD. The heat up time is incredibly quick. It gives an audible beep indicating power and when it reaches operating temperature. Nice sheath to put it away hot. Its been a great tool.
